by Cpl. Robert L. Cook
Jan. 1942-Sept. 1945
For four long years
We’ve fought the foe,
Slugged it out
Toe to toe.
But like no other
Fight we’ve fought,
Our efforts have
Been for naught.
Militarily we are strong,
Where the hell
Did we go wrong?
Perhaps the reason
Really lies
In trying to change
People's lives,
People who have no care
For lives like ours,
They cannot bear.
Democracy is not for all,
We fought for ours
You will recall.
It’s something that
You must hold dear,
Be willing to fight
Thru blood and tears.
For it is born
From tyrannies,
From death and pain
And being held
In dire disdain,
Of being naught
In a tyrant’s eyes,
A life that
You must despise.
O Lord,
Make special a place
For those who have fallen
From the chase,
Who gave their lives
With love and care
In hope that all would share
A life of hope and peace.
Amen.
