My Ol' Clock
by Cpl. Robert Lin Cook
Jan 1942–Sep 1945

I have a clock
I’ve had for years,
it sits beside my bed.
It served me well
and I must tell,
I’ve looked at it
so often.

In early morn,
when I’m awake
before dawn appears,
I toss and turn
and sadly yearn
for sleep I
can't muster.

I cannot fault
this fine ol' clock
for it’s done me well,
no fault is its
that I can’t snooze
the whole damn
night away.

I’ll let it do its thing
for it does it well
and I’m beholden
for the time that
it does tell.
