My Country,
Right or Wrong,
My Country
by Cpl. Robert Lin Cook
Jan 1942–Sep 1945

The country’s in
a hell of a mess
I need to send
an SOS to
find a feller
of some clout
who can fix
what it’s about,
who knows the right
and knows the wrong
and knows how to carry on,
who sits above
the common fray
and leads the congress
through the ‘nays’
and get things done
one by one though
he works from
sun to sun.

We need that kind of man today
though they are hard to come by,
I fear that what we have for pickin’
may get themselves a good lickin’
as you can see from presentation
there ain’t none worth consideration.

So let us all just hang and rattle,
we’ve got to do some battle
before we can find the right feller
to bring us back to dead center
where we can improve our
situation and once more be
a solvent nation.
