Where have all my buddies gone
with whom I spent so much time?
Have they been called across the line?
Are they just shades in the realm of time?

Where have all my buddies gone?
Have they left me far behind?
Or are they waiting over the hill
for me to catch up to fill
the ranks of their brigade?

Where have all my buddies gone?
I see them pass me one by one,
their shoulders sag
like sodden rags,
they tire of war
and want no more.
They've seen too much
of death and dying.
Oh, give them peace.

Relieve them on their duties,
they've earned their chit,
deserve their due.
Stand aside and let 'em through
for they were buddies
of me and you.
Oh, where did all my buddies go?
