The Battle
by Dave D'Arche, January 2000

I thank you God
for taking me fast,
a tremendous blow
but pain that did not last

I walked beside my brothers
through all the day. . .
with tears Lord, so many
died along the way

Bayoneted rifles thrust
in the ground,
with helmets on top,
all around

The fight is over,
the battle won. . .
so many mothers
have lost a son
